Sona Mehring gets hugged a lot. Just about everywhere she goes, people want to thank her and let her know that CaringBridge – the online health social network she founded 16 years ago – changed their lives, or the life of someone they know and love.
And why not hugs? People start a CaringBridge Site when they need to feel love – mostly when they’re ill, injured, recovering, or simply alone. The hugs are a natural way to say “thank you” for the private, personal website that cost them nothing, but was priceless because it allowed them to negotiate their health journeys in the best possible way: connected to people who care, and supported by all the love and compassion their friends and families could supply.
Now she has “Hope Conquers All,” a collection of 21 stories by real CaringBridge users. The tales are funny. They’re heart-rending. They speak of pain and loss, hope and compassion, and the whole roller-coaster ride of emotions that come with a life-changing health event. What’s more, all author proceeds from the book go to CaringBridge, helping even more families on their own health journeys.
“All the beautiful stories I’ve heard could easily fill another dozen books,” Mehring says. “And they’d be just as good as ‘Hope Conquers All’. The ones I’ve selected are told in plain language with no artificial, sentimental frills. They need none. That’s their power.”
